Everyone does it.
Oh, there are a few who don't, or claim they don't. There are those who make sure their cars are fitted with hands-free systems.
But it's so very tempting to leave your phone in your car's cup holder and pick it up sporadically to check it, especially when you're sitting in traffic.
Some estimates suggest that 3,000 teens die each year in accidents involving texting and driving. The tempting thing is, therefore, to offer serious messages to combat this.
AT&T's powerful 'It Can Wait' campaign is one example.
Teens tune out serious messages, however. So the New Zealand Transport Agency thought it would try something different.
More Technically Incorrect
A new ad suggests a remedy for reaching for your phone: reach for the person in the passenger seat. Specifically, their hand.
The couples paired in this ad are not necessarily those who would naturally hold hands and that's what makes the ad amusing.
Add to that the soundtrack -- Lionel Richie's 'Hello' -- and you have something that might, just might, get a few people to participate in this exercise rather than reach for their phones.
I can imagine the roads of New Zealand being filled with drivers and passengers holding hands, as perplexed police officers wonder what on earth is going on.
It's surely worth trying.
